Notes
This work consists of 100 color palettes (100 iterations) combined with interactive geometric shapes. At first, the visual composition is still. Your touch activates movements and the transformation of shapes. You create a random transitory state of the visual composition. Damien Poulain is inspired by anything that surrounds him, from images, to sounds and words. For him, everything is connected and interconnected. The quote by filmmaker Chris Marker “Chance has hunches that should not be mistaken for coincidences”, is a good introduction to this piece.

Josef and Anni Albers
Boghossian Foundation, Villa Empain, Brussels, Belgium

The Boghossian Foundation is proud to host the first exhibition in Belgium of the work of Josef and Anni Albers, two pioneers of modernism who produced pivotal artworks that marked the history of 20th century art. Featuring some 100 artworks (paintings, assemblages, photographs, graphic works, textiles, films, and furniture) the exhibition retraces the Alberses’ respective artistic careers and sheds light on their close and intimate relationship that allowed them to mutually enrich and empower one another throughout their lives.
The exhibition unfolds in the Villa Empain. Initially designed for a couple, the pure lines of this masterpiece of Art Deco architecture heralded the arrival of Modernism. The Villa Empain provides the perfect setting to showcase the Alberses thoroughly modern, international vision, and, more specifically, the aesthetic and pedagogical values they still embody to this day.
The show also endeavours to examine the legacy of Josef and Anni Albers and the influence of their work and teachings on such artists as Olivier Gourvil, Linda Karshan, Mehdi Moutashar, Vico Persson, Leïla Pile, Charlotte von Poehl, Damien Poulain, Chloé Vanderstraeten and Bernard Villers.

Damien Poulain is an artist responding to various invitations, engaging with design, architecture, and the built in natural environments. His practice transmutes influences from Shintoist, primitive, and heraldic symbology, as well as contemporary material and digital culture, to propose a universal visual language. Through an evolving range of formats including textile, paint, sculpture, and ephemeral architectural volumes, he devises glyphic systems of geometry and color. These codes raise questions about the ways humans relate to each other, to their surroundings, and to the mystery of existence. Poulain’s work is nomadic and contextual in nature. His imprint ranges from monumental interventions to small-scale paintings, which he produces in ongoing series linked to place and time. He intends for his projects to invite cross-cultural engagement and build communities, disseminating a universal message of love, beauty, and possibility. In addition to the public spaces that are Poulain’s preferred canvas, his work has been exhibited at solo shows in Seoul at Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery; in London at Kemistry Gallery and KK Outlet; in Tokyo at Calm and Punk Gallery and Claska; and group shows at the Museum of The Image in Breda, Holland and 21_21 Design Sight Museum in Tokyo. He lives in Paris and works around the world.
